GBN is under the oversight of the elders of Southaven Church of Christ in Southaven, Mississippi.
It is a question we all should ask ourselves at some point. The answer is in Jesus Christ. The steps and plan for man’s salvation can be found in the scriptures along with examples of conversions of others.
Romans 10:17“So belief cometh of hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.”
James 1:22“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deluding your own selves.”
Hebrews 11:6“And without faith it is impossible to be well-pleasing unto him ; for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that seek after him.”
James 2:24“Ye see that by works a man is justified, and not only by faith.”
Mark 16:16“He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that disbelieveth shall be condemned.”
Acts 2:38“And Peter said unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
Acts 17:30“The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked; but now he commandeth men that they should all everywhere repent:”
Luke 13:3,5“I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all in like manner perish.”
Matthew 10:32,33“Every one therefore who shall confess me before men, him will I also confess before my Father who is in heaven.”“But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father who is in heaven.”
I Timothy 6:12“Fight the good fight of the faith, lay hold on the life eternal, whereunto thou wast called, and didst confess the good confession in the sight of many witnesses.”
Romans 10:9,10“…because if thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus as Lord, and shalt believe in thy heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved:”“for with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
Acts 2:38“And Peter said unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
I Peter 3:21“which also after a true likeness doth now save you, even baptism, not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the interrogation of a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ;”
Acts 10:48“And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.”
Galatians 3:26,27“For ye are all sons of God, through faith, in Christ Jesus.”“For as many of you as were baptized into Christ did put on Christ.”
Acts 22:16“And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on His name.”
Feel free to read these verses in the Bible and ask us questions. We are here to teach and grow together.
1. Singing: I Corinthians 14:15; Ephesians 5:18,19; Colossians 3:16; Hebrews 2:12
On the backside of the pew in front of you, you’ll notice a rack that holds hymnbooks that you are welcome to use. The song leader announces a number that you will be able to find in the hymnbook or feel free to sing along from the overhead display. Something unique, and one you may may find strange is that all our music is “a cappella,” meaning we do not sing with the accompaniment of any type of musical instrument. We seek to worship according to the New Testament pattern. Since the New Testament leaves instrumental music out, we have decided to do the same.
You might think we are too rigid on this point. We hope you respect our reasoning for it as well as our strong conviction for it. We also hope you will find the singing meaningful and we urge everyone to feel free to participate.
2. Prayers.
There will be several prayers during our service covering special needs, requests, and thanksgiving.
3. Lord’s Supper: Acts 20:7
If you visit on Sunday morning (or Sunday evening) the Lord’s Supper will be included in our worship service. Churches of Christ observe this memorial every Sunday. Again, the reason for this is our earnest desire to follow the New Testament teachings. The church of the first century celebrated this observance on the first day of the week.
We know from respected historians that in early centuries the Lord’s Supper was an every-Sunday commemoration.
4. Offering: I Corinthians 16:1,2
At the conclusion of the Lord’s Supper there will be small baskets passed to collect a weekly financial offering.
As our guest you are not expected to make a donation. So please feel comfortable to pass the collection plate down the row.
5. Preaching: Matthew 23:8-12; Galatians 3:26-28; I Peter 2:5,9
You might notice that our preacher has no formal title. We do not refer to him as Reverend or Pastor. He might be addressed as Dr., but only if he has earned that academic credential. He may be referred to as brother, mister or most likely by just his first name.
He also won’t be wearing anything that sets him apart from the congregation. We believe that the priesthood is for all believers and that we are all equal in that regard.
The sermon will last about 30 minutes and will be bible centered, and scripturally based.
6. Invitation: Acts 8:35-39; Romans 6:3,4; Colossians 2:12; Acts 2:38
At the close of the sermon, the speaker will “offer an invitation”. This is simply an expedient time to invite those who are moved to do so to make a commitment or request prayers for support.
The preacher will encourage those who wish to “respond” to come to the front while the congregation sings another hymn. You’ll notice one or two men may also stand at the front. These are some of our Elders. They will welcome anyone who responds, and help them with any needs they may require.
Don’t worry, you won’t be singled out during this invitation. There may be several who respond, or none.
Those who do respond may wish to be Baptized, wish to confess struggles with sins in their life, or may ask for the prayers of the congregation on their behalf.
Should anyone respond for baptism, you will witness the baptism during this service. The baptism will be by immersion and for the remission of sins.
